What would you say if I asked you the most significant factor (i.e., the keystone) in driving successful change management? Maybe you would cite effective leadership, cultural buy-in, processes, technology, communication, or resources.
Having a little fun, let's start by asking AI what it thinks:
ChatGPT tells me that it is “leadership commitment and communication.”
Perplexity takes it a step further by citing “leadership commitment,” combined with supporting elements such as “employee engagement, clear vision and goals, dedicated resources, and effective communication.”
Next, let's consider the many change management frameworks and academic practices that exist to help business leaders navigate change. Below are a few examples relating to people, processes, and prioritization:
For my own practice, I leverage a mix of tools and techniques to help my clients navigate change, picking and choosing based on each client's unique needs and circumstances.
With that said, I keep coming back to a particular factor that I believe is the keystone of successful change management efforts within family businesses. I call this factor the "internal driver," or in more practical terms, an effective internal day-to-day manager (i.e., an operator) to help drive ongoing implementation, adoption, and management of change efforts.
Without this key "internal driver" (or habitual 3rd party help), change efforts can easily die on the vine. Does your company have this internal leader or manager?
Food for thought as you consider change efforts within your own company.
